To select positions «R», «R», «2» or «L» press the release button. The functions of the positions are described below:
Position «R»
This position is used to park the vehicle and then apply the parking brake firmly. In this position, the engine can be started. Do not select this position while the vehicle is moving.
Position «R»
This position is used for reversing. It can only be selected when the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
Position «N»
No transmission included. In this position, you can start the engine - or start it again, even if the car is in motion.
Position «D «
This is the position for normal driving.
Position «2»
Choose this position for driving in heavy traffic or in the mountains.
Position «L»
Used for driving through sand, mud or snow, for driving on steep hills and descents, and for engine braking.
For normal driving, set the lever to the position «D»
Toyota's automatic transmission is a three-speed high performance transmission. For economical use of the vehicle, accelerate from a standstill with gradually increasing pressure on the pedal. Automatics will switch at the same time to the second and then to the third gear.
If you need to accelerate quickly, depress the pedal «gas» all the way down. Depending on the speed of the vehicle, the automatic transmission will automatically shift to lower, second or first gear.
Riding in lever positions «2» or «L»
If the selector lever is set to «2», the vehicle will move in first gear and shift into second, but third gear will not engage «L», the gearbox does not shift above first gear at all. This gives you the opportunity - just like in vehicles with a conventional gearbox - to choose the engine speed yourself. Usually the reason for choosing this mode is the possibility of using engine braking when driving in heavy traffic or in the mountains.
Please note that the following speeds must not be exceeded when accelerating:
- Position «L» – 62 km/h
- Position «2» - 112 km / h
Don't move into position «2», if your vehicle speed exceeds 112 km/h. This may cause engine malfunction.
Proper riding
Make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before you enter «R» or from it.
Do not put the gear selector in the position «R», until the car actually stops. Always use the parking (manual) brake. Do not rely on the transmission to hold the vehicle.
If you have a long downhill section, slow down and shift into a lower gear. Thus, the motor performs a braking action. Be aware that the brakes can overheat and stop functioning properly if you use them excessively for a long time.
When driving on a busy street when accelerating, shifting up or down a gear and braking, be especially careful. An unexpected change in engine speed, which occurs during heavy acceleration or engine braking, can cause the drive wheels to skid or lock up.
If there is a gusty side wind, reduce your driving speed. Slower driving allows better control of the car.
Do not shift the lever from positions «R» or «N» in position «D» or «R» when the pedal is depressed «gas».
