If you need to tow your car, we recommend that you contact the service departments that provide this service.
Proper equipment ensures that your vehicle is not damaged during towing. The relevant authorities know all the necessary regulations for correct towing.
If your vehicle is not properly towed, it may be damaged. Although most drivers know the correct measures when towing, it is still possible to make a mistake. To avoid the risk of damaging your vehicle, you must ensure that the following precautions are observed. If necessary, show the towing driver this page.
Towing Precautions
1. When towing, always use a reliable chain system and strictly follow the relevant regulations of the current traffic regulations.
Manual Transmission
Towing with the rear wheels on the road: Release the parking brake.
Towing with the front wheels on the road: Place the shift lever in neutral and turn the ignition key to «ACC», because the steering wheel lock is not enough to hold the front wheels while towing in the forward direction. If the front wheels are damaged, use a special trolley (see middle picture).
Automatic transmission
Towing with the rear wheels on the road: Release the parking brake.
Towing with four wheels on the road: The vehicle may only be towed frontward. It is forbidden to tow at a speed above 45 km/h or over a distance of more than 80 km. Before towing, check the fluid level in the automatic transmission. If it's lower than the line «NOT» on the dipstick, add fluid or use a tow truck.
Under no circumstances should you tow a vehicle with an automatic transmission in reverse or with the front wheels on the road, as this may result in serious transmission failure. If your vehicle needs to be towed on its rear side, always shim under the front wheels with a special dolly (see middle picture).
Towing in case of emergency
In case of emergency, attach the towing cable to one of the towing eyes under the front of the vehicle.
Use the tow rope or chain only when the vehicle is to be towed on paved roads. There must be a driver in the car to turn and brake. When the engine is turned off, the hydraulic brake booster and power steering do not work. Efforts to brake and turn the steering wheel will become much greater than usual. Towing in this way is not possible if the wheels, axles, transmission, steering or brake system are damaged.
Before towing, release the parking brake and set the gear to idle (neutral) or. respectively, in position «N». The ignition key must be in positions «ACC» (the engine is off, or «ON» (engine running).
