Cruise speed can be kept higher or lower within engine performance, although a slight change in speed may occur when upshifting or downshifting. On steep slopes, a greater change in speed may occur, so it is best to drive the vehicle without resorting to cruising.
Attention! For maximum vehicle control, do not use cruise control when driving in heavy traffic, changing traffic conditions, or slippery (wet, covered with ice or snow) roads and in strong winds.
Avoid speeding up when driving downhill. If the vehicle speed is too fast due to the cruise setting, cancel the cruise function and downshift to use engine braking to slow down.
Turning on the system
To operate the cruise control, press the button "CRUISE ON*OFF". This will turn on the system. An indicator light on the instrument panel will indicate that the desired cruising speed of the vehicle can now be set. The second press will turn off the system completely.
Setting the desired speed
On vehicles with automatic transmission, before setting the cruise speed, set the transmission to "D".
Set the vehicle to the desired speed, push the control down towards "SET/COAST" and let him go. This sets the desired vehicle speed. If the speed is not satisfactory, move the lever up for a faster speed or move it down for a slower speed. Each switch changes the speed setting by 1.6 km/h. Now you can take your foot off the accelerator pedal.
If you need to accelerate - for example, when overtaking - depress the accelerator pedal hard enough to exceed the set speed. When you release it, the car will return to the speed set before the acceleration was performed.
Attention! For manual transmission:
When driving with the cruise control on, do not shift into neutral without depressing the clutch pedal as this may cause the engine to over-rev or over-rev.
Cancel preset speed
You can override the preset vehicle speed:
- pulling the lever towards "CANCEL" and letting him go;
- pressing the brake pedal;
- pressing the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
If the vehicle speed falls below 40 km/h, the preset speed will be automatically cancelled. If the vehicle speed drops below 16 km/h from the preset speed, the preset speed will also be automatically cancelled. If the preset speed is automatically canceled in cases other than those listed above, have your vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer.
Return to higher speed
Push the lever up towards "RES/ACC" and hold it in that position. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. While the lever is pressed, the vehicle will gradually pick up speed. But in order to return to a higher speed sooner, you should accelerate the car, and then push the lever down in the direction "SET/COAST".
Return to lower speed
Push the lever down towards "SET/COAST" and hold it in that position. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. While the lever is pressed, the car will gradually slow down. But in order to return to a lower speed sooner, you should slow down the car, and then push the lever down in the direction "SET/COAST". On automatic transmission vehicles, even if overdrive is disengaged while the cruise control is engaged, engine braking will not be performed because cruise has not been cancelled. To decrease vehicle speed, return to a slower speed by using the cruise control lever or depressing the brake pedal. If you use the brake pedal, cruise control will be cancelled.
Resume preset speed
If the preset speed has been canceled by shifting the governor lever, or depressing the brake or clutch pedal, pushing the lever up in the direction "RES/ACC" the speed set before the cancellation will be restored. But if the vehicle speed drops below 40 km/h, the preset speed will not be resumed.
Cruise System Violation Warning
If the indicator light "CRUISE" on the instrument panel flashes when using the cruise control, press the button "CRUISE ON*OFF" to turn off the system, and then press the button again to turn on the system. If one of the following occurs, there is a problem with the cruise system:
- the indicator light is not lit;
- indicator light flashes again;
- indicator light goes out after flashing.
In this case, have your Toyota dealer check the vehicle.
